Prayer, Service, and Community Living Worldwide to Transform Lives

Christ the King Priory
Tororo, Uganda

Work of the SJBVC

Christ the King Priory is a vibrant and welcoming Benedictine community located in the town of Tororo, Uganda. With a rich history and a strong commitment to service and social justice, the priory is dedicated to improving the lives of the local community and promoting spiritual growth and development.

Volunteers play a vital role in the priory's mission, bringing their unique talents, skills, and perspectives to a range of projects and initiatives. Volunteers assigned to Christ the King Priory work primarily at the Benedictine Eye Hospital, which is operated by the monks of Christ the King. Here, volunteers assist in a variety of roles, including in the H.R. department, testing the vision of patients, and teaching a computer education course for the hospital's employees. By sharing their skills and knowledge, volunteers help improve the quality of care at the hospital and enhance the skills and knowledge of the staff.

Volunteers also have the opportunity to teach at the Benedictine Vocational School, a dynamic educational institution that provides vocational training and skills development to local youth. Whether it's teaching a trade or leading a computer class, volunteers play an essential role in helping young people develop the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in today's rapidly changing world.

In addition to their work in education and healthcare, volunteers have the opportunity to farm crops in the novitiate garden, helping to provide fresh, healthy food for the community while also learning about sustainable agriculture practices. They may also assist in coaching baseball at the primary school, helping to promote physical activity, teamwork, and sportsmanship among young people.

At Christ the King Priory volunteers engage with the local community and immerse themselves in the rich culture and traditions of Uganda. Volunteers may have the chance to participate in cultural events and celebrations, learn about traditional crafts and practices, and build relationships with local residents, creating a lasting impact and deepening their understanding of this vibrant and dynamic region.
