Saint John's Benedictine Volunteer Corps

Prayer, Service, and Community Living Worldwide to Transform Lives

What is the BVC?

The Benedictine Volunteer Corps of Saint John’s Abbey in Collegeville, Minnesota exists to provide a year of volunteer service for graduates of Saint John’s University (Minnesota) at a monastery of the worldwide Benedictine confederation and to support the work, prayer, and life of Benedictine monasteries around the world. Grounded in Benedictine values and spirituality, the BVC provides a unique encounter with the Catholic monastic tradition, the multitude of needs expressed in religious communities around the world, and the challenge to commit one's talents to meeting these needs. The BVC has sent over 315 men to 26 Benedictine monasteries around the world.

A message from abbot Doug

As the newly elected Abbot of Saint John's Abbey, I am deeply committed to continuing our support of the Benedictine Volunteer Corps. This program embodies the core values of our Benedictine tradition - service, community, and spiritual growth. By sending young Johnnies to Benedictine monasteries around the world, we extend our mission beyond the walls of Saint John’s, fostering a spirit of global solidarity and mutual understanding. The Benedictine Volunteer Corps provides an invaluable opportunity for participants to deepen their faith, gain cross-cultural experiences, and contribute meaningfully to diverse communities. It aligns perfectly with our commitment to education, pastoral ministry, and service to the Church and the wider world. As monks, we are called to witness Christ's love through our work and prayer. The Benedictine Volunteer Corps allows us to share this calling with young people, inspiring them to live out Benedictine values in their own lives and communities.
