Below are the sites where the 2024-2025 Chapter of Benedictine Volunteers are serving.

 
 
 

Montserrat, Spain

Saint Mary of Montserrat Abbey in Barcelona, Spain was founded in the 11th century and is a pilgrimage site welcoming guests from around the world. In addition to the breathtaking views and architecture of the basilica, pilgrims are drawn to the miraculous statue of the Black Madonna and the world famous Escolania—the boys’ choir of Montserrat that sings at services daily.

 

Bengaluru, India

The Asirvanam Benedictine Monastery is the first Benedictine community in India. The community runs a well-equipped Retreat-house which serves priests and other religious in India as well as people of other religions. The community also sponsors St. Benedict’s Academy located in Bengaluru.

 

Nairobi, Kenya

The Prince of Peace Abbey near Nairobi Kenya is a community of The German Ottilien Congregation. In consultation with the prior of the monastic community SJBVC volunteers serve in the schools, retreat center, Mathare slum or parish in Nairobi or in other missions of Prince of Peace Abbey.

 

Hanga, Tanzania

Hanga Abbey was founded as a Monastery on January 15, 1957 as the first "all native" monastery in Africa. Hanga Abbey belongs to the Saint Ottilien Congregation based in Germany. Hanga Monastery was elevated to the status of Abbey on December 13, 1993. There are currently 144 professed members in the community.

 

Humacao, Puerto Rico

Founded in 1947 by monks from St. John’s Abbey, Monasterio San Antonio Abad lives out its Benedictine ministry by educating youth through a comprehensive education in civic and social formation, inspired by the Gospel and social teachings of the Church.

 

Newark, New Jersey

Founded in 1857 by monks from the Abbey of Metten in Bavaria, Newark Abbey is one of the oldest Benedictine monasteries in the United States. The monastery was originally established in Newark to care for the German Catholic immigrants in the area. From its origin, the mission of Newark Abbey has been serving disadvantaged populations through parish work, pastoral outreach, community service, and most extensively, education by operating Saint Benedict's Prep. There are currently fourteen professed members of Newark Abbey.

 

Rome, Italy

Sant’Anselmo in Rome, Italy is the international house of studies for The Order of Saint Benedict worldwide. Sant’Anselmo in Rome is the center of the Benedictine Confederation. The Benedictine abbots of the world meet every four years here for the Confederation congress. Sant’Anselmo is the seat of the Abbot Primate and it is here that monks sent to Rome reside while teaching or studying at (Collegio Sant’Anselmo) the Benedictine University (Pontificio Ateneo Sant’Anselmo).

 

Tabgha, Israel

Tabgha Monastery is a dependent priory of Dormition Abbey and is located on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. The mission of the monastery is to be caretakers of the Church of the Multiplication of Loaves and Fishes and to run the retreat house Beit Noah. Roughly five thousand pilgrims visit Tabgha every day during peak season, and overnight guests are welcome to stay in the retreat compound and pray with the monastic community.

 

Butare, Rwanda

Monastere de Gihindamuyaga in Butare is integrated with the local community through farming, employment, and religious activities. Volunteers primary work is teaching English in the school and to the brothers in the community.

 

ESQUIPuLAS, GUATEMALA

Abadía de Jesucristo Crucificado welcomes volunteers who come to teach English and participate in the life and work of the community. The volunteers' main work is teaching English to 4th-6th grade students at Colegio San Benito Esquipulas, a local school supported by the monastery. Through engaging lessons and interactive activities, volunteers help students improve their language skills and broaden their horizons.
